Staff Accountant (Nonprofit)

Location: Portland, OR (Hybrid or Onsite)
Pay Range: $30-35 per hour
Employment Type: Full-time | Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant supports the financial operations of a mission-driven nonprofit organization by ensuring accurate accounting, timely reporting, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This role works closely with program leaders, finance staff, and external partners to maintain strong fiscal stewardship while supporting the organization's mission and impact.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain general ledger entries and ensure accuracy of financial records
  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
  • Perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Track and reconcile restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Support grant accounting, including expense tracking and reporting
  • Prepare financial reports for internal stakeholders and leadership
  • Assist with annual audits and provide audit-related documentation
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations
  • Collaborate with programs and operations teams on budgeting and expense tracking
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and fund accounting
  • Experience with general ledger accounting and reconciliations
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar)
  • Strong Excel skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with grants and restricted funding
  • Prior audit support experience
  • Familiarity with payroll and benefits accounting
  • Passion for nonprofit or mission-driven work
